The channel between Lake Merritt and the bay has been recently cleared, so the lake’s ecosystem is in better shape than it has been in years. Joggers and dog walkers take the lakeside path every day, while crew teams and even gondolas glide through the water. At night, the entire 3.5 mile shore glows by a beautiful string of lights. Sitting lakeside, Children’s Fairyland has delighted generations of children of all ages.
Nearby is the Grand Lake Theatre and another vibrant commercial district. (Home of the Mighty Wurlitzer!)
There is a myriad of housing choices in the area, including condos and grand homes from a bygone era.
Oakland’s Lake Merritt is what many consider to be the heart of Oakland. 155 acres of sanctuary in the midst of this bustling city, with 3.4 miles of perimeter to walk, skip, or jog. And those waves are cleaner than they’ve been in years! Click here to read my recent blog post on the clean up of Lake Merritt.
