Making the most of square footage, and converting spaces to make them all the more livable and luxurious is trending among homeowners and real estate enthusiasts right now. And I get why! With inventory low and home prices soaring, space is at a premium. Lots of folks are interested in small/economized living spaces – sort of like these Japanese hotel “rooms.”
I covered a bit about space utilization in my last blog and in keeping the spirit, would like to delve a bit deeper – from small spaces being utilized in clever ways to the actual living spaces themselves. Think tiny houses, container homes – even customized house boats!
All sorts of conversions and renovations are occurring to accommodate Air Bnb rentals, to rent out (on or off the grid), for studios and home offices, or simply as guest rooms to house the occasional one-too-many friend or long lost family members. Detached garages are being transformed, basements and attics made over.
The tiny houses movement and container home trend has begun here, too. I myself have had clients ask me about buying a lot and dropping a container onto it.
Take a look at the various ways Bay Area home owners are converting their unused spaces into much needed amenities. Your thoughts about the tiny houses movement? Share them with me in our comments section below.

Tired of sky high rents and overpriced property, this Bay Area resident constructed a micro mobile home and parked it in Sebastopol, California. It’s a great example of modern comfort packed into 160 square feet and loft.
THE CHIC CONTAINER HOME
The container home trend is happening right now, in fact there’s a small “containertopia” community existing in West Oakland.
